Hi. I’m Patrick.
I’m a mechanical engineer by trade, but I love nature, I enjoy traveling, and I’ve acquired a passion for capturing it all in still frames. I started ReFrame due to my desire for some better camera gear solutions.
My first product, Theta, is one that I designed from scratch and I use every time I pick up one of my cameras. Along with a growing line of my own designs, I plan to also offer to you what I’ve found to be some of the best gear already on the market for travel and adventure photography.
If you’re interested in some of my personal work, here’s a collection of some of my favorite shots: photographybypatrick.com. You can follow me personally on instagram, and follow ReFrame on instagram as well.
From a very young age, I was always tinkering with things. When something in the house broke, my parents would normally give it to me and I’d spend hours taking it apart, figuring out how it worked, and salvaging the parts that I thought could be useful to me in the future. It became pretty obvious pretty quick that if I were to go to college, it would be for engineering. But I also had a creative side that, with the help of my grandmother, always had me dabbling in the arts.
Photography wasn’t introduced in my life until my pre-teen years when my father showed me some of his old photographs from college. I exhibited some interest, so he taught me the basics of aperture, shutter speed, and film ISO on his Nikkormat 35mm SLR camera. I soaked it in like a sponge, but like most of my interests at that time, it was fleeting.
To begin a recurring theme, I was intrigued again when I got my first digital point-and-shoot camera. I did some “artistic” works (read: nothing notable. Well, maybe notably bad.), and then subsequently dropped it again.
Moving further into my adult years with a “big boy” mechanical engineering job, a little bit of savings, a newly purchased engagement ring, and plane tickets to Ireland, I decided it was time to dive back in. I bought a Nikon D7100 and a case in which to hold it (and, cleverly, to also hide the engagement ring).
A few trips and a little bit more gear later, I’ve identified a few key areas that just really need improvement. Thus ReFrame was born.
ReFrame products are engineered for improved comfort and functionality, while also keeping aesthetics in mind - we aren’t barbarians, after all.
A balance of quality and affordability should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway.
